Years ago there was a woman with two young children who was struggling with addiction to alcohol. She went to her doctor for help and he prescribed her a barbiturate. This not only compounded her addiction problem, but very nearly killed her. Her friends and family were no help either - they wanted their drinking buddy back. When her eight year old son came to her bedside one afternoon, she held his hand and asked him to stay close by with her for a little while. She felt sure that she was going to die that day.
After he left, she begged God to let her live and fulfill her role as a mother, and the next day she began a quiet, personal search for answers. She read every book she could find on healing and spirituality. She went to support group meetings and worked her way through a twelve-step program. She prayed her heart out, and “by the grace of God” she started to heal. Not only did she stop drinking, but she healed “the hole in her soul” that led her down wrong path in the first place, and soon she became an inspiration for others. Over the years since then she has helped hundreds of people on their healing path, often answering their call for help in the middle of the night when there was no one else to call.
And in her search for answers, she found a lot of new ways to heal without drugs or surgery. She found amazing people who had also found their own unique way to this alternative healing path – people with inspiring stories to tell - personal stories that often flow from struggle and pain to spiritual awakening, divine intervention, love-based healing and a return to joy. Some have survived cancer or other “incurable” diseases, even after they were told there was no hope. Many of them are walking talking healing miracles. They are acupuncturists, nutritionists, herbalists, energy workers, chiropractors, homeopaths, spiritual advisors and other types of “alternative” healers with uncommon depths of kindness, compassion, intuition and healing wisdom.
The woman I’m telling you about is my mother Dorothy and I was that eight year old boy. It took my sister Julie and me many years to understand all that she had lived through and what a gift she has been for so many people over the years.
One particular act of kindness she often does inspired us to create this charitable foundation…
You see, people who are newly recovered from a major life crisis like addiction often face new challenges. They suddenly become aware of new aches and pains and emotional distress such as anxiety and stress or grief and depression, not to mention the many illnesses and diseases that we all face. And because they tend to be adverse to “quick fix” pill-based solutions, they are looking for more natural forms of healing. If someone came to mom in distress, she would share her experiences with them, and recommend a particular healer, but they’d often say, “I don’t have the money right now and it’s not covered by my health insurance.” So she’d look them in the eye, hand them $50 and say, “Here take this. Go get the healing you need. Then when you’re feeling better, you can pay me back, or better yet, help someone else to get the healing they need.”
So that’s what we do. We help people in distress to get the healing they need – the kind of healing that isn’t advertised on television or covered by health insurance, and we promote the alternatives – the natural, nutritional, “mind-body-spirit” healing practices - the non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical pathways to good health and wholeness. And we hope that someday soon the medical establishment will fully embrace this other more love-based path to healing so that we will have a truly integrated, holistic health care system.
Since we created Our Weeping Angel Foundation in 2007 we have helped dozens of people to get the healing they need, but the demand for our service has been quite frankly overwhelming. The need is far greater than we ever imagined. And, as far as we know, we are the only charity of our kind.
People from down the street and across the country are reaching out and asking for our help. They share their distress with us ranging from cancer to Lyme disease, from children with autism to people of all ages with chronic pain, from addiction to depression, you name it. And often they turn to us only after all else has failed. For example, a woman named Sandra with a deeply entrenched case of Lyme disease came to us after she had spent every dime she had seeking treatment from the medical community. She had sought help from the top Lyme literate doctors in the country, but the treatment they prescribed didn’t help her, and the cost was not covered by her health insurance. She had lost her home, her husband, her job and all semblance of a normal life before turning to alternative healing. It took about $600 of healing treatment (with our help) to get Sandra back on her feet. This is just one of our many alternative healing miracle stories.
But more often we have to say, “We’d like to help you, but we don’t have the funds right now.” This is why we are reaching out and asking for your support.
