What is Alternative Healing?

While modern medicine relies primarily on surgical, pharmacological and behavioral solutions to heal the symptoms of health problems and disorders, alternative healing encompasses a wide range of practices and philosophies which attempt to heal the root cause of illness and distress on a physical and metaphysical level.

One prevalent alternative healing philosophy is that human beings are divinely designed to be healthy and whole. We believe that good health does not come from the addition of pharmaceuticals or surgery, but from the removal of stressors, environmental toxins and/or unhealthy diet and from a loving relationship with the natural world and the people around us.

Alternative healers often embrace healing methods that have been in use for hundreds if not thousands of years around the world. Many of them believe that nature has elegantly provided us with everything we need to survive and thrive including food, water and a host of natural medicines.

Alternative healing does not reject all modern medicine. We are thankful to have so many good doctors and hospitals available to us, especially in the case of accidents, traumas and orthopedic repairs. When dealing with disease, chronic illness and emotional distress, however, there seem to be limits to the healing power of pharmaceuticals with a very steep price tag and far too many adverse side effects. Alternative healers often direct their clients to herbal remedies, homeopathic formulas and natural healing practices that have been passed down through the ages which produce remarkably good results without any adverse side effects. We also believe that the profit motive inherent in the modern medical system, particularly when it comes to long term pharmaceutical therapies, seems to be corrupting the business of healing people.

Another common alternative healing belief is that we are energy beings having a human experience and not just a physical collection of chemicals and elements. From this viewpoint we see that illness, pain, fatigue and many other disorders come from energy depletion, poor energy flow or energy blockages in the body. Related is the concept that we are all connected to the universal love-based, life-force energy that created us, and that we can improve our health, boost our immunity and heal from disease when we learn how to sense, embrace and absorb more of this natural energy flow.

Another prevailing alternative healing philosophy is that the job of a healing practitioner is primarily preventative. Modern medicine “fails” when our symptoms get worse. Alternative healing “fails” when we get sick in the first place. Healers who embrace this philosophy are generally adept at helping us to keep our energy flowing properly, our vital organs functioning properly and our immune system strong so that our bodies naturally fend off threats to our good health and wellness.

It has also been proven that our thoughts and our state-of-mind, including moods and core beliefs, have a powerful effect on our bodies and therefore our health. By turning worry, fear, anger, sadness, grief, stress and negativity into optimism, compassion, love, laughter and gratitude, we naturally tend to be healthier, happier, kinder and more joyous.
Many classically trained counselors, psychiatrists and social workers are using alternative healing therapies with their clients and getting better, faster and more lasting results.

Many alternative healers believe that our relationships and experiences in this lifetime may be caused by our actions, relationships and experiences in prior lifetimes. If this is true, then it is entirely possible that illness or distress caused by past life experiences can be revealed and healed in this lifetime. Past life experiences or “karma” may also explain why children are born with and/or develop serious illnesses before they are exposed to toxins, stressors or unhealthy food.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, science and religion have finally converged on the power we all have to heal ourselves and others through conscious intention and command to the “god-love energy field” that created us and connects everyone and everything in the universe. The process is ancient, but the scientific confirmation is new. Jesus healed people through his strong connection to God, or the “life giving energy field” if you prefer, through his directed intention to heal and his confident command to God for the healing to occur.

Recent quantum physics experiments have proven the power of conscious intention to affect the outcome of events. This is creating a transformational convergence of science and religion that, in our opinion, will ultimately lead us to a grand new form of integrated medicine. Lynne McTaggart has done a brilliant job of gathering this scientific evidence and presenting it in easily understood terms in her books: “The Field,” “Living the Field,” and “The Intention Experiment.” Visit www.lynnemctaggart.com for more information.

(Please note that Lynne is not a sponsor of nor is she in any way affiliated with Our Weeping Angel Foundation. We just feel that she has done an exceptionally good job of researching and writing about this subject.)

Part of our mission at Our Weeping Angel Foundation is to support the alternative healers who embrace these philosophies and help us all to live in good health, wholeness and joy. We hope you will support us in this mission.
